Falls Prevention

The Challenge

The original referral for Mrs P came via Garforth NET requesting grab rails to the front door. A falls assessment was carried out and it was clear that Mrs P was very active and independent, in good health, she cared for her neighbour who was not much older than herself, still drove etc.

A couple of months later Mrs P phoned myself quite distressed  to report that she had fallen resulting in a hip fracture and had been discharged from hospital with minimum support and her mobility was now significantly worse than previously. She stated that she did not know who to contact and was struggling with bathing.

The Solution

I visited Mrs P and it was apparent she was low in confidence and was fearful of falling again. I was able to refer her to the Community Falls Service where a physio visited within a week and organized a home exercise programme which quickly improved her confidence, balance and strength. A referral was also made to ASC for an external metal rail to the front path. I was able to provide Mrs P with a bath board to enable her to use the shower over the bath again.
