Preventing Hazards in the Home

The Challenge

Our client Mrs L. lives alone and suffers with arthritis and back problems.

She heard about the falls prevention service at Care & Repair through Morley Elderly Action and she referred herself to us.

A Support Worker went out to carry out an assessment of the home, and immediately identified other parts of the home where a risk of falls was present. They found that she was crawling up the stairs on hands and knees to avoid falling down. The high step up to the front door also limited the number of times she was able to leave the house.

The Solution

Mrs L. was referred to the handyperson service for an external metal rail to the steps and for extra banister rails on the staircase as this would be a quicker fix.

During their home visit the Support Worker also found that the client’s smoke alarm was broken so referred Mrs L. to the Fire Service for a free replacement.
